Sanrio Puroland is giving Japan’s summer festival season a futuristic makeover with the Puroland Neo Summer Festival, a limited-time event that blends traditional matsuri fun with cutting-edge technology and eye-catching Y3K aesthetics.
Running from July 10th to September 1st, the event transforms the indoor theme park into a neon-lit world inspired by the concept of “Future Cool Breeze.” While many summer festivals celebrate nostalgia, Neo Summer Festival looks ahead and embraces the Y3K trend, a futuristic, cyber-inspired style often described as the next evolution of the Y2K fashion revival.
At the heart of the event is the returning Neo Ennichi, Puroland’s modern take on a traditional Japanese festival game area. Guests can try cute carnival-style activities such as ring toss, shaved ice-themed challenges, and Gudetama-inspired games, alongside new digital experiences powered by emerging technology.
One of the biggest highlights is Mirai Photo, an AI-powered attraction making its debut in Japan. The experience transforms visitors into futuristic Y3K versions of themselves in real time, with the option to incorporate design elements inspired by beloved Sanrio characters including Hello Kitty and Kuromi. Guests can even have their futuristic portraits displayed on a giant digital screen within the venue, creating the feeling of starring in a futuristic cityscape.
The event will also introduce Mirai Yagura, an immersive installation featuring 3DCG projections of Hello Kitty and Kuromi dressed in exclusive Y3K-inspired outfits. Projected onto transparent LED screens, the display creates the illusion that the characters are walking through a futuristic urban world.
Fans of Sanrio’s expanding collaborations will also find plenty to enjoy, including the first-ever Puroland collaboration with Wanpaku! Touken Ranbu. Exclusive photo spots, themed food, limited-edition merchandise, and special collaboration goods will be available throughout the event.
With futuristic visuals, interactive technology, and plenty of kawaii charm, the Puroland Neo Summer Festival offers a unique twist on Japan’s summer festival tradition, all from the comfort of an air-conditioned indoor venue.
