Kurobe Dam, at a height of 186 meters, is the tallest and largest dam in Japan. Discharging water at a rate of more than ten tonnes per second, it is definitely a sight not to be missed. Kurobe Dam can be viewed from a variety of spots, but this year, a new observatory provides a great close-up view. Built at an altitude of 1508 meters, it provides a direct view of the water discharge. There is also a photo service. For a fee, you can have your photo taken against the background of the dam by a remote camera on a hill.

Water Discharge Timings (may be cancelled due to weather conditions): 6/26 - 7/31: 6:00 - 17:30 8/1 - 9/10: 6:30 - 17:00 9/11 - 10/15: 7:00 - 16:30

I still clearly remember the day I first landed in Japan, and since then it has been my goal to set foot in all 47 prefectures. I try to look for less touristy areas, preferring the countryside to the city. I'm always amazed by the many Haagen Dazs and ice cream flavors available only in Japan.
