Terroir is one of the best French bistros in Matsuyama where you can enjoy both good food and wine. Though it is located less than a 10-minute walk from Shieki station in the downtown area, the surrounding area is very quiet, and when you go upstairs to the restaurant above a parking space and open the door, a cozy and relaxing atmosphere welcomes you.

From autumn through winter, Terroir offers great game meat dishes such as deer, boar, dove and duck in various à la carte styles. For appetizers there are boar pâté, (¥950) and duck terrine (¥1,200), and main dishes include, boar meat with tomato sauce (¥1,800), and sautéed venison (¥1,800), just to name a few on the menu. The dishes here are not so gamey, though there is a slight flavor which is one of the characteristics of game meat.

If game meats are not your preference, don’t worry. The bistro serves other delicious dishes such as beef cheek with red wine sauce (¥1,800) and French duck confit (¥1,500), and excellent fish menus including oven roasted sea bream (tai) with herbs, onions, and potatoes (¥1,800) and escallop wrapped in a pastry (¥1,800). I also like their appetizers such as gorgonzola, tomato and spinach terrine (¥900), sea bream carpaccio (¥900) and blue cheese salad with apple and walnuts (¥900).The menu partially changes to serve the best ingredients in season.

You will want to pair these dishes with wine. Terroir has a wide selection of wine from France and Italy to Oceania and America with a walk-in wine cellar. Empty bottles of wine are displayed at the rack so that customers can see the labels on the bottles when they choose their wine. If you don’t know what wine would go well with your food, you can ask the chef, or the assistant chef for advice. Wine is served by the glass as well at reasonable prices and there are other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, too.

The bistro also serves lunch with three courses at ¥2,200, ¥2,500, and ¥3,500. If you sit at a table by the big window during the lunch hour, you can enjoy the view of greenery and flowers of herbs planted on the terrace.

I am sure you will enjoy great meals and wines with your friends or family, both at lunch and dinner.
