Soaring over Barley Fields in Fukui

Watch the golden barley dance in the fields

Hiroshi Ohnuki   - 1 min read

Although unknown to most people, Fukui is the best producer of six-row barley in Japan (producing 31% of Japan's total output). Six-row barley is usually used for barley tea whereas two-row barley is used for beer.

Fukui prefecture has been encouraging local farmers to grow six-row barley since the mid '70s, and made Fukui one of the top producers of it. Thus, during the harvest season each year, from late May to early June, you can see the endless rows of golden barley spread across the fields in many places around Fukui.

This aerial video was shot in Miyano-shita area and Tenga-cho in Fukui City and in a few places in Sakai City. Enjoy the dancing barley and the burning orange sky towards the end!
