A glowing spectacle at this historic destination

Venue Kokura Castle

When Oct 24th - Nov 3rd 2025, 5:30pm - 9:00pm

Each autumn, Kokura Castle in Kitakyushu is transformed into a glowing spectacle as citizens place around 30,000 lanterns across the castle grounds, the Toranomon gate, and surrounding areas. The event stretches across almost two weeks, offering visitors a chance to see the historic landmark bathed in soft, flickering light.

From 5:30 p.m., guests are invited to join the lighting ceremony by bringing a small lighter to kindle the first flames. The lanterns remain lit until 9:00 p.m., when the castle gates close and the lights are extinguished. Entry to the castle is allowed until 8:45 p.m., giving visitors plenty of time to enjoy the illuminated paths, castle keep, and landscaped gardens.

The atmosphere combines history with community spirit, as the lanterns are placed not only by event staff but also by local citizens who contribute to the design and layout. The sheer scale—tens of thousands of lanterns glowing at once—creates a truly otherworldly view.

Admission (which includes entry to Kokura Castle and the adjoining garden) is priced at 1,000 JPY for junior high school students and older, while children in elementary school and younger can enter free of charge.

Getting there

Kokura Castle is located 10 minutes on foot from Nishi-Kokura Station, which is served by the Kagoshima Main Line.
