Beginning in June 2019, the large torii gate of Itsukushima will be covered for renovations until sometime in 2020.

Every March local people dress up in medieval Heian costume to pay thanks to the powerful Heike clan leader, Taira no Kiyomori, responsible for turning the floating Itsukushima Shrine on the sacred island of Miyajima into the stunning piece of unique architecture that remains today.
