Mysterious Lake: Onneto

Deep jade-like green

Onento is a beautiful lake sitting just west of Lake Akan, east Hokkaido. “Onneto” means 'Aged Marsh' in the Ainu language.

The surface of the lake changes color continuously - from a deep green jade to a blue starlit sky. In the early morning, I was fascinated by a cloud rolling in over the sun-lit edge of the lakeside mountain.

There are some convenient wooden walkway trails around the lake - but be careful, they can be slippery after a rain.

A strong sulfur smell permeates the air in some parts of the lake, and steam rises in other parts.
