There are a plethora of phenomenal spots to enjoy cherry blossom season in Japan, and one of Miyagi Prefecture's best is the Hitome Senbonzakura Festival. The annual event celebrates the beauty of 1,200 cherry trees along the Shiroishi Riverside and 1,300 cherry trees at Funaoka Castle Ruins Park. Around this area there are a number of vantage points that are seen as the best viewing spots for the blossoms, including the Shiroishi River Sen-ou Park, Niragamizeki Weir, and the Mount Niragami Observation Platform.
The cherry blossoms here are typically at full bloom around the mid-April timeframe, but do check the official event website closer to the season for a definite confirmation.
Admission to the festival is free of charge.
Getting there
The Hitome Senbonzakura Festival area can be accessed within easy walking distance from either Ogawara Station or Funaoka Station on the Tohoku Main Line. For those planning to drive, on-site parking is available.
