Niigata Prefecture isn't short on wide open spaces, but if you want to enjoy some wide open space with a bit of structure then the Echigo Hillside Park is a beautiful spot for it.

The park is a favorite for our family to visit, given that there are so many areas across the grounds for both adults and children to enjoy. For the children in particular, there are several wooden adventure playgrounds and bouncy domes available for them to burn off some energy. If you head to the park during the week it's likely you'll see school students there for field trips - it's a popular place!

One of the most enjoyable areas of Echigo Hillside Park is the expansive rose garden. Opened in 2003, the rose garden comprises of six different areas, including sections dedicated to Japanese roses and an English-styled garden. There are various other blooms scattered across the grounds at different times of the year.

Echigo Hillside Park also has an on-site restaurant, cafes, and even barbecue facilities if you'd prefer to cook your own meals. Bear in mind that if you'd like to grill, the barbecue facilities require an advance reservation.

Adult admission to the park is 450 yen, seniors admission (over 65 years) is 210 yen, and children aged 14 and under are free. Park opening hours differ based on the season, so it's advisable to check their website before your intended visit.

Getting there

Echigo Hillside Park is located approximately ten minutes drive from the Nagaoka Interchange of the Kan-Etsu Expressway.

Alternatively, if you're visiting via public transport, head to Nagaoka Station and take the Ote Exit. From there, look out for the New Town line via Sekihara Bus. The bus stops directly at the parking lot and the ride from the station to the park takes just under 40 minutes.
