If you're in Niigata during the rainy season and you're a hydrangea fan, there's one place you shouldn't miss. Kannonyama Park is home to around 5000 hydrangea plants, filling the grounds with flowers in shades of purple, blue, pink, and white. Along with the beautiful flowers to enjoy, the park gives off some spectacular views out over the surrounding area, including glimpses of Mount Sumon, Mount Agawa, and Mitsuke City.

The best time for hydrangeas can differ slightly from year to year depending on blooming conditions, but plan for around mid-June through mid-July.

If you're in the area during springtime, be sure to stop by the park and enjoy the cherry blossoms, too. There are rows of trees in several different varieties, including the Somei Yoshino and Yaezakura (double sakura) types.

Getting there

Niigata's Kannonyama Park is located approximately 10 minutes by taxi from the JR Mitsuke Station, which is served by the Shinetsu Main Line. For those planning to drive, do note that there is only minimal parking on site (10 vehicles), so public transport is advisable.
