About Tsuwano

Tsuwano (津和野) is a castle town nestled in a valley in western Shimane prefecture, bordering Yamaguchi.

Tsuwano's town center is home to traditional samurai mansions that provide a glimpse into a past Japan, with their white walls and red tiled roofs. Carp-filled canals run through the town and help give this charming retreat its 'little Kyoto' moniker.

Tsuwano is home to one of the five greatest Inari Shrines—Taikodani Inari Shrine—as well as numerous other attractions like the Tsuwano Castle Ruins.

Tsuwano is served by the JR Yamaguchi Line. Visitors can reach Tsuwano via Matsue to the east (3 hrs, via Izumo) or Shin-Yamaguchi (60 min, via Yamaguchi) which is much closer. For those interested in visiting nearby Hagi, train connections via Masuda (3 hrs) or a direct bus service (100 min, 2220 yen one way, Bocho Bus) are both available.
