Oya Shiryokan - Museum of Stone

Massive underground quarry-turned-amazing tourist spot

The Oya Shiryokan (website in Japanese) opened in 1979 to showcase the town of Oya's mining history. Housed in a 20,000 square meter ex-quarry, visitors are left speechless at the sheer size of this man-made cavern. A gift shop, cafe, and interesting museum welcome guests at ground level. Stairs lead down some 30 meters to the underground mining area. Once inside, be sure to wander around and explore all the dark corners of this fantastic location.
