A Trip to Kosoan

Why this little tea house in Tokyo is worth the hype

I lived in Tokyo for four years, and I adore the city. There's so much to see and do, but for an introvert like myself, I find it important to look for moments of peace and solace in the bustling metropolis. Thankfully, Tokyo really is the city that has it all, and one of the places I came to love for some quiet time is a tea house called Kosoan. It's been written about before here on Japan Travel, but if you're wondering whether it's worth the visit I can say hands down the answer is yes.

Part of what makes a trip here so nice is just how unexpected it is. From the outside it just looks like a residential house, save for a small sign letting you know you're in the right place. Inside, there are a range of traditional Japanese items on display, such as hina dolls and wooden chests, and I spent quite a bit of time admiring those - they really add to the overall atmosphere and charm. Once you find a table and cozy yourself up on a cushion on the tatami floor, it won't take long for your order to be prepared. The wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) at Kosoan change seasonally, but that's part of the incentive to stop by more than once!

If you enjoy Japanese gardens, you'll also appreciate a visit to Kosoan. Find a seat by the windows, and you'll be able to enjoy your matcha and sweet treat while looking out over the scenery outside. It's a place that feels like water for the soul, and somewhere I will always enjoy revisiting when I'm in the big city.

Getting there

Kosoan is located a short five minute walk from Jiyugaoka Station, served by the Tokyu Toyoko Line and the Tokyu Oimachi Line.
