Just because you're in the electronics hub of Japan and the building’s name includes the word Radio, doesn't mean at all that the establishment displays and sells electronic devices solely related to radios. Instead, Akihabara Radio Kaikan deals mostly with Anime and everything to do with it.
This ten-floor shopping center is a one-stop port of call for adventurers, the young at heart, and explorers: whether you're a local seeking additional items for your collections, a student who wants to just sit and relax, a tourist up for a unique experience, or simply a passer-by who hopes to fill your hungry stomach and relieve your dry throat with delectable treats, you'll find much more than you can imagine in this establishment.
From the basement to the top floor, you'll find yourself enjoying various anime-related items and souvenirs: manga comics, magazines and books; trading and game cards, figurines, dolls and toys; tools and supplies for scale trains and building models; anime gear, and costumes, to name but a few.
Electronic and audio components, tools and equipment are also available in some shops. And for the convenience of shoppers, Ginza Lion, a restaurant in the basement level and Sunkus, a convenience store on the first floor, will keep you well enough fed to last you the whole day through. Getting to the highest part of the building is no problem, with a convenient choice of elevator, escalators or, if you have the energy, stairs that zigzag their way up to the tenth level.
Akiba Radio Kaikan has been a famous landmark in Akihabara ever since it was built in 1957, and was once closed for renovation and redesigning in August 2011, becoming bigger and better after it was reopened. From the outside the building is totally unmissable, with its vibrant colors from the first level and up, and the name up against a huge yellow background that runs across the top of the building’s entrance.
The easiest access to Akihabara Radio Kaikan is from JR Akihabara Station; from the Electric Town or Denkigai exit, you'll immediately see the building, just a few seconds away.
