A new private sauna experience coming to Roppongi is taking relaxation in a very unexpected direction: letting adults temporarily stop being adults.
SAUNA MOTHER, opening in late October, is built around the concept of “120 minutes to stop being an adult.” The private facility takes guests through an experience designed to recreate the comfort and security of infancy, beginning with a sauna inspired by the womb and ending with its centerpiece, the enormous “Mother Sofa.”
The 85°C, 40% humidity sauna is surrounded by red lighting, womb-like sounds, and a scent inspired by a mother’s skin. After sweating it out, guests move to a 15°C cold bath designed to resemble a newborn’s bath, complete with a giant mother’s hand emerging from the wall. A shower then recreates the sensation of lying on a mother’s lap while being washed.
The final stage is the Mother Sofa, which supports the body in a curved, baby-like position and gently rocks at one of three speeds. It can also provide a gentle stroking sensation, while projection mapping allows guests to choose one of four different “Mothers” to watch over them, including the Japanese mother goddess Izanami, an anime-inspired mother, an art-inspired mother, and mythical mothers from around the world.
SAUNA MOTHER is a private, reservation-only facility for one to four people, with 120-minute sessions. Prices range from ¥8,500 for one person to ¥20,000 for four.
Early access trials are planned for early to mid-October, with applications available through the facility’s official Instagram.
