Tokyo is set to become an open-air cultural stage this autumn, with a new citywide arts festival bringing contemporary art, theater, music, and illuminations to some of the capital's best-known neighborhoods.
ARTE TOKYO, organized by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo International Cultural and Arts Festival Executive Committee, will run from October 10 to December 31, 2026. Rather than centering on a single venue, the festival will connect cultural events and creative installations across the city, encouraging visitors to discover Tokyo from new perspectives.
The inaugural festival will focus on three areas: the waterfront, Hibiya and Marunouchi, and Yoyogi and Shibuya. Plans include art exhibitions, performances, seasonal lighting displays, and projects in public spaces, with elements of the cultural program developed for the Tokyo 2020 Games also set to return.
Along the waterfront, visitors can expect art and illumination projects around Odaiba, complementing the Tokyo Aqua Symphony fountain displays and the international art exhibition TOKYO ATLAS. In Hibiya and Marunouchi, seasonal illuminations will combine with cultural programs in parks and public spaces. Meanwhile, the Yoyogi and Shibuya area will connect winter lighting displays with nighttime art experiences in Yoyogi Park.
The festival also aims to extend beyond these core districts through collaborations with cultural organizations and events elsewhere in Tokyo, potentially linking experiences across a wider area.
For international visitors, ARTE TOKYO offers a different way to explore the capital during the autumn and winter months, with art and entertainment becoming part of the streets, parks, and waterfront scenery rather than something experienced only inside galleries or theaters.
Further program details will be announced by the individual event organizers.
