Venue : Ryujin Suspension Bridge When : Late Apr - Mid May 2025

Ibaraki's Ryujin Bridge was opened in 1994, and it's one of the largest pedestrian suspension bridges in Japan. It's a popular destination for nature lovers who appreciate the seasonal views from the bridge, and it's also one of the country's top spots for bungee jumping if you need an adrenalin rush.

During the Golden Week period, the bridge is home to a koinobori (carp streamer) festival to celebrate Children's Day. Koinobori are meant to represent the strength and perseverance, since carp are known for their ability to swim upstream and overcome obstacles.

On May 5th (Children's Day) during the koinobori festival, children who are junior high school age and younger will be able to cross the suspension bridge free of charge. On regular days, the crossing fee is ¥320 for adults (high school students and above), and ¥210 for children.

Getting there

The Ryujin Suspension Bridge is located a 40-minute bus ride from Hitachiota Station, which is served by the JR Suigun Line. Take the Ibaraki Kotsu Bus bound for either Shimotakakura or Shimotakakura-Daigo, and get off at the dedicated stop for Ryujin Suspension Bridge or Ryujin Suspension Bridge Iriguchi.

For those who opt to drive, the bridge is a 40 minute drive from either Hitachiminami-Ota IC or Naka IC on the Joban Expressway.
