Unagiya Hirokawa

Supreme eel delicacy in Arashiyama, Kyoto

Consuming unagi (eel in Japanese language), especially during summer months, is believed to have great health benefits. Established in 1967, Unagiya Hirokawa is a traditional unagi restaurant located in Arashiyama, Kyoto. With its fresh daily catch, this ‘Sukiya’ (traditional wooden) style restaurant serves the highest quality of grilled unagi cooked in their unique way. Besides the usual unagi donburi (grilled eel and rice), there are side dishes such as grilled eel liver or grilled eel wrapped in egg. I was pleasantly surprised when I took my first bite of the unagi that was grilled to perfection. It literally melts in my mouth, leaving a rich flavour that lingered.

If you are an eel-lover, Unagiya Hirokawa is a must-try when you drop by Arashiyama! However, like all reputable restaurants in Japan, a queue starts to form at Unagiya Hirokawa one hour prior to its opening in the evening.
