Despite its rather controversial nature, Yasukuni Shrine is a lovely, peaceful place to escape from the city. There are plenty of trees, a long, wide avenue, several smaller buildings and a tiny, beautiful garden around a pond. Only the presence of the Yushukan War Museum reminds us that this is a shrine to all those who lost their lives in defense of the Empire of Japan.
