Built in commemoration of Sugawara no Michizane, a figure regarded as the god of scholarship, the Yushima Shrine is one of Tokyo’s representative shrines. While the shrine gets a significant amount of regular visitors, it experiences an especially high volume of visitors during the winter season when school entrance exams take place. The elaborate shrine that rests in the quiet neighborhood of Yujima is an integral cultural structure of Tokyo, so if you are in the area, it may be worth taking five minutes to walk from Yujima Station to the shrine.
