The best place that shows the epitome of Tokyo's weirdness is the "Kawaii Monster Cafe."
Located in the centre of Harajuku, one of the most bizarre districts in Tokyo, this cafe stands out among the typical "maid cafes" for its decoration and unusual architecture.
Once you enter the cafe, you will find a whole different world ahead of you. A "doki doki" style (literally, to make your heart pound) waiter, dressed in brightly saturated colours, will show you around to your table. Beside her is a sweet-looking carousel. This is undoubtedly the cutest (or kawaii) thing one could possibly experience.
There are different parts in the cafe, but they all embody the same theme -- imagine Alice in Wonderland in Tokyo. I won't need to say more, once you see the different animal heads with various colors above you, connected to bottles from their chest.
Even the restrooms are very strange.
The cafe has very refined neon lights and every color that can be seen is intensely bright.
The menu relates to the theme, and the food has its own characteristic with lots of strange colors.
There are times where the staff turns off all the lights and all you can see is the bright carousel -- this is the start of something you will never see again in the rest of your life. Two waiters start their own show, who start dancing on top of the carousel and sing a unique song. They get on a giant fat cat, and the atmosphere gradually becomes even cuter.
I was curious about the cafe's origins, and found out that it was designed by Sebastian Masuda, who was also the visionary for the famous YouTube video "Ponponpon" by the J-Pop singer Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.
This weird vibe will invite you to go nuts, with all the sweetness and colours making you feel as if you are part of this magical world. Come feel the most kawaii experience in this cafe!
