Nothing epitomizes the urban glitz and glam of Tokyo quite like Shibuya Crossing. Concrete towers emblazoned with colorful advertisements provide visual intrigue everywhere you look, and the atmosphere, both bustling and orderly, reflects the values of the metropolis. Whether rain or shine, the conglomeration of shops, bars, and restaurants interwoven with automobile and foot traffic provide an exciting snapshot of Tokyo. As night falls, rainbows of lights bathe the area in an ever changing glow. (0:32-1:03)
Tokyo is more than just its skyscrapers though. It is a city of history and people. Shimbashi, a salaryman district in Minato City, features a number of rustic izakaya where Tokyoites come together after workdays. While Shibuya Crossing represents the big picture of Tokyo, smaller districts, like Shimbashi, provide glimpses into its residents’ lives. Although presently being demolished, the iconic Nakagin Capsule Tower in Chuo City encapsulates this sense of community and something we had to visit before too late. The structure is composed of multiple pods that make up a whole–a perfect metaphor for urban life and Japanese culture collectively. (1:03-1:28)
Just as modernization, history, and people have a home in Tokyo, as does nature. Shiba Park in Minato City, a haven of verdant lawns and trees, creates an idyllic spot where people can rejuvenate with nature. For a panorama that encompasses Tokyo’s diversity, visit Tokyo Tower, and witness breathtaking views of this one-of-a-kind city. (1:28-1:32)
